Episode 49: Mike Runion

June 9, 2023

You can’t talk South Sound beer without mentioning 7 Seas Brewing and its founders, Mike Runion and Travis Guterson. From their humble downtown Gig Habor beginnings in 2008, to the 2009 fire relocation across town, to the 11,000-square-foot-building back in downtown Gig Harbor, demand for their Rude Parrot IPA, Ballz Deep Double IPA, 253 Pilsner and their other craft beers forced the duo to constantly think bigger. In August 2016, they moved into an 80,000-square-foot expansive taproom, marketplace, and production facility with 10,000 sq. ft. basement for barrel program at a site that once held part of the Heidelberg Brewery in Tacoma’s Historical Brewery District. Along the way Runion and Guterson managed to be the first brewery in Washington to can craft beer, won “Best Brewery in the South Sound” every year, and brought back the historic Heidelberg Lager.

Tune in Grit & Grain Episode 49 to hear Runion discuss their early days, his love for community, the Heidelberg lager re-launch, their return to downtown Gig Harbor with a forthcoming showcase taproom, and the state of craft beer.
