During Prohibition, a blind pig called “The Skoog” poured beer and liquor for Tacomans who, first, could find the speakeasy, and second, knew the password or secret phrase. The Skoog still exists in Tacoma for those who have a key to the secret location. Grit & Grain podcast has titled our Tacoma beer history podcasts, “The Skoog Files,” as a nod to the Prohibition-era Tacoma secret watering hole. Grit & Grain Episode 11 (The Skoog Files) picks up where Grit & Grain Episode 3 (The Skoog Files) last left off — the 1935 Tacoma beer scene and the history of the Heidelberg Brewery.

Alright Grit and Grainers! Email us at cheers@gritandgrainpodcast.com with your comments, opinions, and drawings of movie scenes using Clockwork Orange, Pretty in Pink, and Blacula colored crayons on one of those tacky paper restaurant placemats. We read and drink everything we receive, and we’ll try to respond as quickly as we can. If not online, then on air.
You can subscribe to GGP on Apple Music, Spotify, Google Play, iHeartRadio, and Stitcher, and please leave us a review. Be sure to also follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for episode notes, beer news, and photos of us getting our itch-buzz on.
If this podcast is not what you expected, please alter your expectations. Be sure to visit the Heidelberg’s original Student Prince mascot at 7 Seas Brewing because he’s all smiles after his student loan was waived. No such thing as too much barleywine. Tune in next Friday for more sweet chatter! Cheers!
