Selling beer. Sounds like a pretty sweet job, eh? It’s beer! The stuff just sells itself! Not exactly. Just ask Keith Carpenter, which we did. At age 21, Carpenter began his beer career in the late 1980s merchandising for Washington distributors during craft beer’s early entry into the market before landing a sales position with the rapidly growing Mac and Jack’s Brewing in November 2000. Growing up in Tacoma, Carpenter is a respected longtime promoter and sales executive in the Washington craft beer scene with stints at Marine View Beverages, 7 Seas Brewing, and his current sales position at Georgetown Brewing. In Grit & Grain Episode 55, Carpenter discusses those crazy early days merchandising, his time at Mac and Jack’s, and his adventures introducing craft beer into the market.
