Episode 45: Tony Lawrence

May 12, 2023

In the late 1980s, Tony Lawrence arrived in Bend, Oregon, for the snowboarding at Mt. Bachelor, but stayed for the dish pit at Deschutes Brewery. Head brewer John Harris knew Lawrence was more than a dishwasher and soon he was washing kegs. Lawrence quickly rose up the brewhouse ranks, and in 2001 left to learn more at Rio Salado Brewing in Tempe under Tim Gossack and Firestone Walker under Matt Brynildson. He returned to Bend, pieced together a 5-barrel brewery in a little concrete countertop shop and brewed his first Boneyard Beer brew in May 2010. Tune in to Grit & Grain Episode 45 to hear Lawrence discuss his days at Deschutes, his deal with Nick Floyd, how he built Boneyard Beer, his early beers, and brewing philosophy.
